The course at the Olds Central Highlands Golf Club opened for the 2017 season last Wednesday (April 5), with a newly redone third hole that will be complete for the May long weekend.

The recent renovations at the Audubon-certified course include a new green and new tee complex, which are in addition to work done last year on holes 6, 7, 8, 9 and 16.

"We've spent a million dollars here in the last 10 years," said the club's pro Wade Bearchell.

In addition to local and league tournaments, the venue will host an Alberta Amateur Qualifier on June 8 as well as a one-day PGA of Alberta players' tour on July 19.

"The greens are in fantastic shape, said Bearchell. "They are as good as I've even seen them."

Three local gymnasts represented the Olds Gymnastics Club at the provincial championships last weekend (April 7-9) for the first time in the club's history.

Soulayah Petersen finished 11th all-around, and Chloe Gardner was 18th in a field of 26 athletes competing in the age-12 category for Junior Olympic level 6. Petersen posted her highest overall score for the year, and grabbed three Top 10s on individual events, including a 4th-place showing on beam. Gardner also found her way into the Top 10s on three occasions, with a 5th-place finish on vault.

Jennifer Conway finished 16th all around in a field of 36 athletes in the over 14 category for Junior Olympic level 6, with a strong 6th-place finish on floor.

"They definitely made Olds Alberta proud," said their coach Michelle Jaffray. "It was truly an incredible experience for them today with tons of smiles."
