Their role hasn't been defined and the tournament is still months away, but the Olds Grizzlys can be counted on to help out with the 2015 peewee AA boys major provincials.
“We'll be here to help out in any way we can. I think it is something that's awesome for the community, awesome for those kids. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play in a tournament like that at home,” said Brett Hopfe, Grizzlys head coach and director of hockey operations.
“They're a very good team. We've watched a couple of those kids; they work hard and compete hard,” he said about the Olds Peewee AA Grizzlys.
Hockey Alberta named Olds as the host community for the tournament earlier this month. Ten of the province's best peewee AA teams will hit the ice at the Sportsplex from March 19-22.
“The neat thing about it is, that's the highest level of peewee hockey. I hope the town understands that there's no AAA in peewee so they're going to be the best kids at that age group,” Hopfe said.
“We're really lucky to have that here. It'll be nice for the town because I think it's been a long time since we've had anything close to that as far as hosting an AA provincials at any level.”
The last time Olds has hosted a provincial boys tournament was 1990.
