Heading to provincials

CARSTAIRS-CREMONA-DIDSBURY - Several athletes from the region qualified for the high school provincial track and field meet at the zone championships on May 22 in Calgary.

The top two finishers in each category advanced to the provincials, which takes place on June 1 and 2 at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School in Red Deer.

Cremona School saw one athlete qualify for provincials. Brandon Tetz qualified in the 3,000 metre run after finishing first at zones.

Hugh Sutherland School (HSS) in Carstairs had five athletes qualify for provincials: Aiden Good qualified after finishing first in both the 800 m and the 1,500 m; Madi Ing qualified after finishing second in the 3,000 m; Skylar Koch qualified after finishing first in the 100 m hurdles; Aidan MacDonald qualified as well after finishing runner-up in the discus; and Kurt Schultz qualified after finishing first in the pentathlon.

HSS coach Jenny Johnson said she was very proud of the student athletes who did so well. She also praised the improvement of Zac MacDonald who finished third in both discus and javelin, and Koch who finished third in 300 m hurdles.

Didsbury High School (DHS) will be represented by Grade 10 student Tage Fawns who placed first in the shot put.

Other DHS athletes competing at the zone championships were: Lacey Newsome, fourth in shot put and fifth in discus; Kassie Miller, sixth in discus; and Andrew Shields, seventh in 1,500 m.
