Former Olds resident Andreas Troschke is setting his sights on qualifying for the world junior championships in hammer throw this spring.

Troschke finished the indoor season earlier this month by throwing a personal best of 17.61 metres, about 60 centimetres further than his nearest competitor, during the Canadian USport Championships in Windsor. As a result, he was ranked number 2 in the country, according to USport rankings.
He’s also ranked number 1 in Western Canada.

Troschke is confident he stands a good chance of qualifying for the world junior championships.
“I think so, and my coach does, so I’m going to work towards that,” he says.

The qualification period for that ends around June 17. Troschke says the first meets he’ll be attending begin in early May.

In the outdoor season, he’ll be competing in the hammer throw.

“The hammer goes much farther (that the indoor weight),” he says.
Troschke, an Olds High School grad, is now attending the University of Lethbridge, where he’s enrolled in that school’s business program.
