The Olds Huskies Peewee football team lost 35-14 to the Lacombe Explosion on Saturday at Normie Kwong Park. It was the team's second game of the season while the Explosion have now played four.
The game was part of a football triple-header that featured the Huskies, the Olds Bantam Bulldogs and the Olds High School Spartans.
Despite the loss, coach Monte Christensen said he was pleased with the way the team performed, considering it is playing with a relatively few 22 players.
After getting down 14-0, the Huskies got their first converted touchdown in two years following about a 30-yard run by Nathan Mullholland, setting up a goal-line scramble on the ensuing play.
“It's the first time in two years we've converted a touchdown,” he said. “We got off to a late start because of numbers, so we were able to find a few more boys to fill out a team.”
Following a fumble recovery at the Huskies' 25-yard line midway through the second quarter in which the Huskies were unable to convert into any points, Ben Arifin of the Explosion scored another touchdown to make it 20-8 for the visitors. The Explosion then added another touchdown before the end of the half.
Following another major score by the Explosion, Mullholland picked off an Explosion pass in the visitors' territory, and ran it back for a second Huskies' touchdown on the day.
“Our guys hung in there. There was a couple mistakes here and there (but) we'll figure it out,” Christensen said.
The Huskies are on the road this Saturday in Wetaskiwin, before finishing off the season with two home games against Innisfail and the Red Deer Steelers on Oct. 15 and 22.
