The Innisfail Cyclones are one step closer to the Mountain View 9 Man Football League championship after their 52-8 trouncing over the Carstairs/Crossfield Tigers on Oct. 18.
Coming off a perfect season with six wins and no losses, the Innisfail Cyclones weren't going to take the first home playoff game against fourth place Carstairs lightly.
“Throughout the week, I told the boys that Carstairs has improved and despite their one and five record, you have to win one game at a time in the post season,” said Trevor Wooff, coach of the Cyclones. “We practiced hard, and every player was part of the victory.”
Kicker Simon Biggar was put into action as a slot back near the end zone and managed to score a touchdown in addition to making one field goal and converting five touchdowns throughout the game.
Devon Hoffensetz scored two touchdowns while Ward Marshall and Darian Davis each crossed the goal line in addition to Biggar's scamper.
“It was nice to have a good crowd come out to the game on a beautiful afternoon and cheer for the team,” said Wooff of the community's support. “It really means a lot for the team.”
The Tigers scored near the end of the game as Wooff played his Grade 10 lines and allowed the quarterback to call his own plays.
“It was a good time to give the whole team playing time. When the Grade 12 players are gone, they will have to be the veterans,” said Wooff.
With the win, the team will now play on Oct. 25 for the league championship in Red Deer.
