Innisfail Jr./Sr. High school city girls team placed second place in the A side playoffs at a home tourney over the weekend.

The Grade 8 and 9 girls beat out Sundre and Delburne in the playoffs but lost to HJ Cody in the finals. The Grade 8 CENAA team also placed second, in the B-side Playoffs. They went up against Cremona before playing Olds High School, who they lost against.

“We’re doing really well today,” said Maria Robinson, Grade 8. “There’s been lots of nice bumps, smashes and dives,” she said, taking a break from a quick practice between games with team member Sabrina Wachter.

“We’ve been working hard and have really improved,” she said of the team growing throughout the season. “We work really well as a team, it’s been a lot of fun.”

Penhold girls were having a fun weekend as well. They beat Olds Koinonia earlier in the day 25-12 and 25-15.

“It’s been great,” said Rebekah Maciborsky. “We played Innisfail in a close game, 24-26 but we did beat out Olds Koinonia,” she said of their improvement.

The girls went on to play that afternoon in playoffs but lost to Sylvan Lake and Spruce View, ending their weekend.

Spruce View won the consolation game against Sundre.

Eight teams played over the weekend in both the École Innisfail Middle School and Innisfail Jr./Sr. gyms.
