INNISFAIL – With the snow nearly gone and warmer temperatures finally here, it’s time for a little spring cleaning.

The Town of Innisfail is encouraging residents to join its Green and Clean Challenge from April 26 to 29.

“It’s a volunteer community cleanup,” said Kane Williams, recreation program coordinator for the Town of Innisfail. “People can tackle a certain area of the town. Either it could be something that they’ve seen that they want to clean up or we can assign spaces.”

Williams said they are hoping to encourage more groups, organizations and corporate teams to participate in the cleanup this year. Groups or teams are asked to confirm areas to clean with Williams when they register for the event.

The town will provide needed items, noted Williams.

“We will supply them with equipment. We’ll give them garbage bags and gloves and we’ll have a Dumpster (available at a location) to dispose of garbage,” he said.

The event kicks off with a barbecue at the Innisfail Aquatic Centre on April 26 at 4 p.m.

This year there is a small incentive for teams to put in a few hours of spring cleaning.

“We are asking that people submit their hours back to us because that’s part of the challenge this year,” said Williams. “We’re going to have an award. If anybody wants to be an Oscar winner, this is their chance,” he added.

The town is awarding a golden Oscar to a group that submits the most hours of spring cleaning.

“We’d like to show special recognition to a group that’s going to do an outstanding effort,” explained Williams, adding the award is made of recycled material. “We have an Oscar trophy that we’re going to hand out to whichever group has the most volunteer hours.”

Williams said cleaning up green spaces will allow local residents to enjoy and appreciate Innisfail’s outdoor spaces.

“Innisfail has some great park space and natural areas. We don’t always have the staff to go and tackle all of it,” said Williams. “This is another opportunity where (residents) can give back.

“It’s a great opportunity to get a team of people together and do it as a group,” he added.

“Everybody is raring and ready to go with spring,” said Williams. “When the weather really starts to turn nice, if the parks are all ready, it’ll be that much nicer to appreciate.”

Teams are asked to register for the Green and Clean Challenge at www.innisfail.ca/gogreen or contact Kane Williams at 403-227-3376 or via email at [email protected]
