Innisfail-area athlete Conor Sinammon is going for the gold in Banff and Canmore next month as part of the Zone 4 Alberta Winter Games Volleyball team.

ìI was invited to be part of the Zone 4 team last year,î said Sinammon. ìI am looking forward to experiencing the Winter Games in February.î

The Grade 9 student at Spruce View School is on the honour roll and is active in athletics year round.

ìI play basketball, ski, and run in addition to my volleyball,î added the 14-year-old athlete. ìBefore the Kings Volleyball Club I was active in track and field and set a Grade 9 record in triple jump, and like my sister, have competed in freestyle ski events.î

Sinammon has only been playing volleyball since he was 12, joining the Central Alberta Kings Volleyball U-13 team two years ago. As part of the Spruce View School team, the Vikings have won the Central Western Alberta Junior High School Athletic Association (CWAJHAA) tournament two years running now, 2012 and 2013.

ìFor a K-12 school of only 300 students the Spruce View Vikings are very competitive and have done well,î said Linda Sinammon, mother of Conor.

The Vikings compete against Clive, Coronation, Donalda, Eckville, Koinonia Christian School of Red Deer, Rocky Mountain House, and Theresetta School in Castor as part of the CWAJHAA league.

Sinammon presently plays for the Central Alberta Kings Volleyball U-15 team out of Red Deer. His position is listed as middle or a power player, which means that he helps set the stage for the setter or power hitter.

The Kings are known this year as a well-rounded team with passionate players who strive for excellence in athletics.

And Sinammon displays that attitude.

ìThe Kings is a volleyball club, as opposed to a regular school team,î said Sinammon. ìPlayers come from different schools, and we pay to play with talented players and for excellent coaching. It is expensive, but well worth the time and money.

ìI enjoy playing sports and being active. Playing volleyball has provided me with an excellent opportunity,î added Sinammon. ìNo matter how the Winter Games turns out, I will continue to play ball with the Kings, and my Spruce View Vikings team. I want to play all the way up to college and university levels.î
