Olds High School student Abi Irving dominated junior high track and field zones May 29.

Irving finished second in the juvenile girls 100 metre (m) event and third in the juvenile girls 200 m event in which Nova Van Soest placed fourth. Irving also placed third in the juvenile girls 400 m event.

Irving, along with teammates Gracie Hodgson, Teagan Rose and Nova Van Soest, finished third in the juvenile girls 4 X 100 m relay race.

In addition, Irving, along with teammates Gracie Hodgson, Teagan Rose and Aaralyn Longmuir placed third in the juvenile girls 4 X 400 m relay race.

In other results, Isaac Paul won the juvenile boys high jump competition.

Haylin Eling placed second in juvenile girls shot put and Jesse Maetche finished second in juvenile boys javelin.

Nova Van Soest placed fourth in the juvenile girls long jump.

The junior girls 4 X 100 m relay team, consisting of  Jaeden Cameron, Lauren Mertens, Elise Schaber and Madison Tyson, participated in high school provincials June 1 and 2 in Red Deer.

OHS track coach Wanda Vandervelden  was impressed with how well the school's track and field athletes did this season.

"Considering we don't have a track to train on and high jump mats etc., the team did very well," she said.

Vandervelden said OHS doesn't have those things because they're very expensive.

She said although the junior girls 4x100 m relay team didn't place in the top three in provincials, they really improved.

"They did really well," Vandervelden said. "They bettered their time that they had at zones."

Overall, she was "really happy" with how all the school's track and field athletes performed.

"We had such a short season because the weather was so poor," Vandervelden said, noting the season was essentially shortened too because of the timing of provincials.

"We had about 50 athletes in total between the seniors and the juniors. Obviously some are more serious about it than others. But the ones who were willing to come out and train on the nights that we were here, they did a really good job," she said.
