Fifth-year guard Ali Cameron only needed 17 shots to score 27 points as the Lethbridge College Kodiaks mauled the Olds College Broncos 70-40 on Nov. 29.
The CCAA's leading scorer was five of eight from beyond the arc, grabbed four rebounds and six steals while playing the second of two games against the Broncos at the Ralph Klein Centre.
“It's not the way we wanted to end it, going into the break. But it's good that we had a good start. We just have to get into better shape over the break and come back stronger than what we're leaving with,” said Broncos guard Marie Lupe.
Lupe scored a team-high 12 points, had eight rebounds and three assists as the Broncos fell to 9-3 after starting the season with nine straight wins.
Playing against the third-ranked team in the country revealed how the Broncos need to cut down on turnovers, Lupe said. Currently, Olds College commits 26.5 of them per game, third-most in the seven-team ACAC South division.
“We just need to take care of the ball a lot more. I think that's been our issue. Even the games we've won, we've had way too many turnovers,” she said.
“And we just need to compete better from the start of games. Otherwise, we're just playing catch-up throughout the whole game and that never works out.”
Both teams shot below 30 per cent that night and Lupe said the Broncos need to get their frontcourt more touches in the paint, adding the guards need to hang onto the ball for that to happen.
