After junior and senior track & field counties last week, head coach Adam Hogarth of Olds High School predicts one of his students could make it to provincials.

Daniela Aguilar, 17, got first place in both the 400 m. dash and the 800 m. dash for intermediate girls.

“She really destroyed the field out at counties,” said Hogarth on Thursday.

“She could possibly make it on the provincials.”

Also achieving first-place finishes in the 400 and 800 m. categories is Shaylin Muller, 15, for the junior girls.

“Carson Jorgensen (16) has been very strong in the distance events,” said Hogarth.

Jorgensen placed first in the 800 m. dash, and second in both the 1500 and 3000 m. dashes for the junior boys.

“He may have won aggregate for the junior boys, but I haven't been able to tally those results yet, so it's going to be close between him and another guy from Sundre.”

For intermediate boys, Sam Prevost, 17, placed first in the 3000 m. dash, and second in both the 800 m. and 1500 m.

Hogarth says despite there being only three pole vault participants this year, all three, (Hannah Buchholz, 15, Alex Groves, 16, and Brittany Hepp, 16) have qualified for zones.

“We'll get a better indication of how they're doing after the zone meet.”

Coach Ken Terpstra of Olds Koinonia Christian School (OKCS) said he felt confident after several of his students won first place at counties.

“I think we're going to win aggregate, but I guess we'll see,” said Terpstra on Thursday.

OKCS student Karleton Moench swept the senior boys, earning first-place wins in the 400 m., 800 m., and 1500 m.

Garreth Archer took first for his discus throwing skills in the senior high counties.

OKCS junior girls Anna Crowe and Janelle Graham tied for first in three events, 100 m., 400 m., and long jump.

Other highlights include Eithan Moench's first-place win for the junior boys in the long jump.

First place in high jump went to Rachel Odersky for the junior girls, and Brielle Jansen took first for the long jump.

Zones begin next Wednesday, May 25, with the seniors, and will continue with the juniors on Wednesday, June 1.
