Two Olds College soccer athletes have been named male and female athletes of the week nationally and locally.
They are Fabian Gromenida and Felicia Rodney of the school's men's and women's soccer teams.
They were each among those named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) male and female athletes of the week last week as well as Olds College and A&W male and female athletes of the week for the Oct. 7-13 period. Rodney was also named the ACAC female athlete of the week.
Male Athlete of the Week
As the Olds College Broncos make a final push for the playoffs, fifth year Gromenida came to play this past weekend in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) action.
On Saturday the Broncos travelled to Camrose to face the University of Alberta, Augustana Vikings. The agriculture management production student-athlete led the team to a 6-1 victory with four goals and an assist, taking home the player-of-the game honours.
On Sunday, the Formosa, Argentina native was key in a fast and aggressive start by the Broncos. He scored a goal in the early minutes of the game versus Red Deer College which got the Broncos rolling to a 5-2 victory over the Kings. That kept the Broncos in competition for the final playoff spot in the ACAC championships.
Female Athlete of the Week
Rodney, a second-year forward came back to the Olds College Broncos starting lineup this weekend after a few weeks off due to injury.
Normally, a player coming from an extended layoff would need to ease into things and have some touches to shake the rust off. However, Rodney's return was far from normal, starting things off on Saturday with a goal versus the Vikings.
On Sunday, one of the greatest single player performances would take place in the ACAC.
The Calgary native started her scoring in the 20th minute and did not stop until she tied an impressive ACAC single-game record of seven goals to lead the Broncos to an 8-1 win over the Queens and putting the Broncos in line for a spot in the ACAC conference championships.
The sports management student-athlete currently leads the South division with 15 goals and is third in scoring in the ACAC. She also leads the entire ACAC in shots.
