The Olds Legion donated $500 to help local throwing athlete Haylin Eling compete in the Royal Canadian Legion Youth Track and Field Championships, held Aug. 9-11 in Sydney, N.S.

Eling, who is with the Olds Velites Track Club, was registered to compete in women's discus throw, shotput and hammer throw.

She represented Zone 2 in the Alberta Summer Games and has qualified twice for Team Alberta, competing in the Tri-Provincial championship the last two years. Eling has also qualified for the Alberta provincial championships and the Alberta schools provincial championships.

As a result of all that, she is ranked nationally.

"The Olds Legion is honoured to present you with this cheque to pay your registration and to cover a portion of your expenses to compete in the Legion National Track and Field Championship," a release from the Olds Legion said.

Eling was accompanied by her parents Dave and Leslie Eling as well as her grandfather, Master Cpl. Patrick Middlebrooke, a veteran who served with the UN peacekeepers for four years in Lahr, Germany.
