Local throwing athlete Haylin Eling turned in a "stellar performance," during a track and field meet in Edmonton, coach Rachel Andres says.

"This was her first indoor meet, and her last opportunity to compete as a Midget (U16)," Andres said in an email to the Albertan.

During the Nov. 17 meet, Eling placed second in shot put with a big new personal best of 11.99 metres (m). The provincial record was 12 m.

Jinaye Shomachuk, representing the Airdrie Aces club, finished first in that competition, but only by 18 centimetres, with a throw of 12.17 m.

Eling also placed second in weight throw with a toss of 13.87 m after only practising it four times.

"With those throws she is currently number three in Canada for the U18 age group in shotput and number two in the U18 age group for weight throw, which bodes well for her end-of-the-season ranking when she moves up to the U18 age group in January," Andres says.
