Olds High School discus coach Rachel Andres finished in first place in the discus throw and set a new Alberta provincial record in her class as well as a new personal record during the Canadian national track and field championships in Ottawa this past weekend.

As a result, she has qualified for the North America-Central America championships, which take place Aug. 10-12 in Toronto.

Andres threw a new personal record of 56.82 metres (m).

"I was in first from the first throw and won by almost four metres," Andres says.

Former Olds resident Andreas Troschke also competed in the Canadian national championships in the U-20 Junior Division.

He placed third in the men's U-20 hammer throw finals on Sunday with throws of 63.70 m and 61.66 m.

On Friday, he placed 12th in the discus.
