Olds Velites track coach Rachel Andres set a new meet record and is now ranked third in Canada after her performance in the New Balance Series meet #1, held May 26 in Calgary.

"Discus fared better for me than the previous meets thanks to more agreeable weather," Andres wrote in an email to the Albertan.

"My toss of 56.70 metres (m) puts me No. 3 in Canada currently and set a new meet record."

The top two discus throwers are eligible to go to the Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru which will be held July 26-Aug. 11.

The cut-off for team qualifications is June 17, so Andres has three more discus competitions during which to throw farther and hopefully qualify for those games.

"The No. 2 thrower is an Alberta native and friend of mine named Gabby Rains," Andres wrote. "Her throw is at 56.90 m, so not far above my current mark."
