Local hockey player Taryn Baumgardt was on the ice playing defence for Team Alberta during the 2012 National Women's Under-18 Championship held in Dawson Creek Nov. 7-11.
Though Team Alberta came in seventh, Baumgardt was happy with her time there.
“It was good experience,” she said.
This was her second time donning the provincial jersey for the nationals. She's also represented Alberta at the Canada Winter Games, where she helped bring in a gold.
Baumgardt, 17, was named as one of the assistant captains for the team this time round.
“It was pretty cool for me to have that opportunity,” she said.
She was thrilled to be playing with other elite athletes.
“It's always an amazing experience to represent your province and play at that level,” she said.
The competition on the ice was tough, with no one game standing out.
“Any team could have won any day,” she said.
It was a true team effort, she said.
“I think everybody made some incredible plays,” she said. “Everyone chipped in.”
The defence player is at the Warner Hockey School this year suiting up for the Warriors, with her season well underway. She's also a Team Canada hopeful after playing for her country against Team U.S.A. in a three-game series in August as part of the selection camp process.
“It was an honour to play for Team Alberta,” she said.
