Local schools compete in badminton

DIDSBURY-OLDS -- Students from half a dozen Chinook's Edge School Division schools competed in a badminton meet on April 3 at the Ralph Klein Centre in Olds.

Badminton players from Cremona School, Didsbury High School, Hugh Sutherland School in Carstairs, Olds High School,  Olds Koinonia Christian School and Sundre High School competed in boys' and girls' singles, boys' and girls' doubles, and mixed doubles in separate divisions for grades 10, 11 and 12.

Students qualifying for the zone championships, which will be held April 13 in Strathmore, included: Didsbury High - Luke Hildebrandt, 1st place, senior boys' singles; Emily Biggins and Core Heistad, 1st place, junior girls' doubles; Dawson Mailer and Zara Waiting, 2nd place, junior mixed doubles; Kassi Hatcher and Lacey Newsome, 2nd place, senior girls' doubles; and Dalyn Shields and Emma Shulz, 1st place, intermediate girls' doubles; Cremona School - Sam Finley, Grade 10 boys singles; Madison Turner and Emily Armstrong, Grade 7 girls singles; Brandon Tetz and Dylan Lane, intermediate boys; and Berkley Steffler and Madison Black, intermediate mixed doubles, Hugh Sutherland athletes Isabelle Katyi, girls Grade 11 qualified for zones, and Grade 12 girl Samantha Bausted qualified for zones.

The junior high (grades 7-9) badminton teams will compete at the county championships on April 6 also at the Ralph Klein Centre in Olds.
