Olds High School teacher Wanda Vandervelden has been chosen to referee the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) national women's basketball championship.

It takes place March 13-16 in the Quebec City suburb of Sainte-Foy.

Vandervelden is one of only 12 people  -- and one of three in Alberta -- chosen from across the country to serve as referees for the tournament.

Vandervelden is pleased and humbled to have been chosen.

"It's definitely an honour," she said during an interview with the Albertan.

It's the fourth time she's been asked to referee at this level. "The other three were in Alberta, so it's nice to go to Quebec City," she said.

"Alberta tends to get a fairly large contingent. We have a really strong education program and training program," Vandervelden said.
