Members of Olds & District Special Olympics (ODSO) are getting ready for one of their favourite fundraising events: the Shaggin On Sno ball tournament.
The 16th annual tourney takes place March 17 and 18 at O. R. Hedges Park.
Organizer Mary Smith says currently, 17 teams are registered, on par with previous years.
"We have raised over $60,000 in support of the Olds and District Special Olympics and we hope to add to this total," Smith says.
This year's theme is Mardi Gras, ODSO chair Karen Mengersen says.
"Special Olympics of Olds and District appreciates the support of these teams, the fun of the weekend and the interest they show in our athletes," she says.
Olds & District Special Olympics athletes have lots of other events coming up too.
On March 24, nine Special O swimmers will be participating in a swim meet at the Olds Aquatic Centre, hosted interestingly enough by Special Olympics Airdrie, according to Mengersen.
Also at that time, six bowlers (one 10-pin and five five-pin) who are part of the 2018 Team Alberta Training Squad, along with their coaches, will be heading to Edmonton for a weekend training camp.
From April 6 to 7, the Olds & District Special Olympics bowling season will culminate with their annual five-pin bowling tournament.
"We are host to seven other affiliates plus our own bowlers," Mengersen says. "There will be approximately 120 bowlers participating over the two days."
The Olds district will also be hosting a 10-pin tournament on April 28.
