OLDS — The Olds Rapids Pistons Masters Swim Club (ORPMSC) turned in some strong results during their first masters meet, hosted by the Foothills Masters Swim Club Feb. 1 in Cochrane.

Peter Verhesen finished first in the 50 metre (m) butterfly, slashing six seconds off his previous time and the 50 m breaststroke, where he shaved four seconds off.

He placed second in the 50 m backstroke, also trimming four seconds, and 100 individual medley (IM), slashing four seconds off his time in that event as well.

Verhesen finished fourth in 50 m freestyle, slicing three seconds off his previous time in that event.

Brittany Gelleny finished first in the 50 m backstroke, shaving two seconds off her previous time.

She also placed third in three events: the 50 m fly, slashing an astounding 12 seconds; the 50 m breaststroke; and the 100 m IM where she sliced off two seconds.

In addition, Gelleny placed fourth in the 50 m freestyle.

Theunis Wessels placed second in the 50 m freestyle.

Cecilia Wessels finished first in the 100 m IM, second in the 50 m backstroke, third in the 50 m breaststroke, fifth in the 50 m butterfly and sixth in the 50 m freestyle.

The club also finished fourth in the 200 m freestyle relay.

Members of the ORPMSC are now getting ready to race in the Make a Wave Masters meet which takes place March 14 in Edmonton and the provincials, which will be held April 25-26, also in Edmonton.

Cecilia Wessels, who serves as head coach of the Olds Rapids swim club, says the club is always looking for more members.

“We want to invite swimmers, triathletes and active individuals to join our club for great team spirit, support and technical help from certified coaches,” she says.

“(Management consultant, educator and author) Peter Drucker said the best way to predict the future is to create it. Join us and we will help you build your future; whatever level of swimming that may be.”
