Olds resident Mark Mengersen is one of 15 Albertans named to Special Olympics Canada.

The squad was announced last week by Special Olympics Alberta.

They're part of a 109-member Canadian team that will compete in the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi March 14-21.

Mengersen is part of the 10-pin bowling team.

It's the first Special Olympics World Games hosted in the Middle East-North Africa region since the movement was founded 50 years ago.

Team Canada athletes were selected based on their performance in the 2018 Special Olympics Canada Bowling Championships in Charlottetown, P.E.I and 2018 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Antigonish, N.S.

During the Special Olympics Canada Bowling Championships, held this past summer, Mengersen dominated in 10-pin bowling, earning gold in singles and gold overall in his division. He also won silver in team competition and doubles.
