Sundre is definitely on the map after the Sundre Minor Hockey Association (SMHA) placed a bid to host hockey provincial championships and won.
On March 14-17, the atom c division provincials will bring more than 10,000 hockey players from more than 100 communities to Sundre.
This will not only bring pride to the hockey community but it will bring business into Sundre for accommodations, dining and more for the four-day span. Sundre will be seen by thousands of people.
ìHockey Alberta would like to thank every association that submitted a bid to host provincials,î said Hockey Alberta president, Rob Virgil.
ìHosting a prestigious event like this is no easy task. It's a huge time commitment and a successful event is dependent on a great deal of volunteer and community support,î he added.
ìWe are confident that this year's selected hosts will uphold our goal of creating a memorable experience ñ not just for the players but for parents, coaches, officials, volunteers and fans.î
Sundre is joining the club of approximately 30 other cities to host hockey provincials, in March and April of this year.
Jimmy Adams, coordinator for Hockey Alberta said starting this month, ìprovincial playdownsî will be held across the province to determine what teams earn a spot to compete in the championships.
The selected destinations to host provincials are based on volunteer support, marketing plans, financial goals and more, said Adams. Sundre has proven to meet all of these requirements.
Sponsors for the Hockey Alberta provincial championships this year are Investors Group, Elite Sportswear, Source for Sports, Insurance Brokers Association of Alberta, Nestle and Best Western.
The Best Western hotel coming to Sundre is scheduled to open in March, just in time for the thousands of guests the community will see that month.
