The Olds College Broncos women’s soccer team defeated the Medicine Hat College Rattlers 1-0 in the faculty and staff appreciation game Sunday, Sept. 22 at Richardson Pioneer Field.
At the 70th minute, there was a Rattlers handball in the box and Katharina Oeltermann made no mistake on the penalty kick, putting the ball into the bottom left-hand corner to make the score 1-0 for Olds.
Medicine Hat got one last free kick by Aleena Matthews moments before the game ended, but the Broncos were able to clear it and the whistle was blown.
Player of the game for Medicine Hat was keeper Amanda Oevering and the Pit Barbecue player of the game for the Broncos was midfield Mackenzie Mohr.
Shots were 20-19 for the Broncos with Olds goalie Jewels Hallock making 17 saves and Medicine Hat’s Amanda Oevering making 13 saves.
Men's team
Despite holding control of the play in the second half, the Olds College Broncos men’s soccer team fell 2-1 to the Medicine Hat College Rattlers Sunday.
Broncos star Fabian Gromenida opened the scoring at 14:12 when Jacob McLarney made a nice pass to Gromemida who popped the ball over Medicine Hat goalie Joao Vitor Duz Batista to give the Broncos the 1-0 lead.
Thirteen minutes later, Medicine Hat had a powerful response when Abdou Raouf Mohamed was sent in from Julian Sanchez and powered a ball with a laser of a shot past Broncos goalkeeper Ryan Murphy.
Mohamed scored another goal at the 38th minute off a penalty shot after there was a foul in the Broncos' box.
With two minutes left, Gromenida had a free kick that he put around the MHC wall, but Duz Batista made a brilliant outstretched save.
At the 19th minute of the second half, Medicine Hat had a penalty kick after a foul in the Broncos' box and Murphy made a fantastic diving save to keep the score within one.
Player of the game for Medicine Hat was defender Tom Bernhardt and the Pit Barbecue player of the game for the Broncos was defender and team captain Brendan Klassen.
Shots were 27-17 for the Broncos with Murphy making eight saves and Medicine Hat’s Joao Vitor Duz Batista making 12 saves.
On Saturday, both the men's and women's teams were shut out by the Lethbridge College Kodiaks. For the women the score was 4-0. In the case of the men, the score was 3-0.
