It's a long way out yet, but organizers have announced they've changed the dates for the 2020 Humpty’s Champions Cup, which will be hosted in Olds at the Sportsplex for the first time ever.
The competition will feature the top 12 men’s and 12 women’s winners from the 2019-2020 curling season in one final showdown. It will be broadcast on Sportsnet and is part of Pinty's Grand Slam of Curling.
It was slated to be held April 21 - 26, 2020. However, that's been changed.
It will now be held one week later — Wednesday, April 29 to Sunday, May 3, 2020, still at the Sportsplex.
Spokesperson Tammy Schwass says the date was moved so it wouldn't conflict with another curling competition.
"Basically in past years, the Champions Cup fell in the same week as the World Mixed Doubles and so they just wanted to make sure, going forward, there was no overlap," she said in an interview with the Albertan.
The 2020 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship will be held April 18 - 25 in Kelowna.
"We were able to take a look and just shift our event by a week to make sure that most of the players or any fans — that sort of thing — that there wasn't an overlap between the two events," Schwass said.
Schwass was asked why apparently organizers did not check out possible conflicts before they set the original dates for the event in Olds.
"I can't comment on that, I'm not sure," she said. "I wasn't involved in the decision from our side or from the Sportsnet side. All I know is that in previous years it was the same and they decided to change it this year."
Other details of the competition, including opportunities for volunteers to help out, will be announced later.
