Olds track coach and throwing athlete Rachel Andres has been nominated for Athletics Alberta Senior Athlete of the Year. The awards banquet takes place on June 15 in Calgary.

Andres competed in discus at a meet June 2 in an effort to snag one of the top two spots in Canada.

She threw a toss of 55.45 metres (m), fighting a tough tailwind, yet still managed to take first place.

Her current season best is 56.70 m which she threw during the New Balance 1 meet, held May 26 in Calgary.

That distance left her sitting in third place in Canada by 20 centimetres.

The top two athletes in Canada are eligible to be chosen for the Pan Am Games, which will be held July 26-Aug. 11 this year in Lima, Peru. The cut-off for making the mark is June 17.

The 56.70 mark left Andres ranked 86th in the world in terms of distance with a world rank of 48th in terms of consistency at competitions.

World ranks are based on a five competition average that takes into account distances along with placings achieved during those competitions.
