DIDSBURY -- Registration is complete for Didsbury baseball and girls' softball, and numbers have been increasing, say organizers.
Ryan Mierke, president of Didsbury Minor Baseball, said the organization has 187 players total -- 133 playing baseball and 44 playing softball.
"We have players aged from four to 16 years old," said Mierke. "We have 18 players in our T-ball program, three teams each in rookie, mosquito and peewee and one in bantam."
The season began May 6 and will run through to June 28, said Mierke.
All home games are played on the diamonds at Memorial Park on the north end of town.
Although Didsbury is not hosting any tournaments this season, all of the teams from rookie to bantam will be playing in one tournament each during the season in various locations including Delburne, Acme, Crossfield, Carstairs, Sundre and Olds, said Meirke.
"Typically we play one game and have one practice each week," he said. "Our AA peewee team plays their games and tournaments on the weekends mostly, with the odd weekday game. They will be playing in provincial playdowns and perhaps we will also have a mosquito team playing in provincial playdowns."
Mierke said baseball is growing in popularity every year for a number of reasons including the easy accessibility to the sport.
"Kids like to be outside," he said. "It's also relatively inexpensive. Most of our program is during the weeknights leaving weekends free for family activities (parents really like that); and pretty well anybody can run and throw, so it is very inclusive, no matter your athletic ability. But as the Blue Jays go so does the popularity of the game all across Canada."
