OLDS — Several members of the Olds College Broncos badminton team placed in the top three in their categories during a tournament Feb. 2 at Concordia University in Edmonton.
That tournament, the third of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC), was held Feb. 2.
Rylan Head and Jenna Kardos placed first in mixed doubles C.
Troy Morgan finished first in men’s singles C and fourth in men’s doubles with partner Noah Jeffery. Both are first-year athletes at the college.
Priyanna Ramdhani placed third in women’s singles and third in women’s doubles with partner Layce Donaldson.
Donaldson is back after taking a year off to work and save money to continue her education.
Head coach Mary Smith was pleased with the team’s performance. She says the team is now focused on upcoming conference championships, which will be held Feb. 21-23 at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton.
According to an ACAC website, the Broncos are going into that tournament as the third seed.
“Troy Morgan and Noah Jeffery are staying even with first-, second- and third-place men's doubles teams and will be focusing on training as they work towards their goal of placing first or second in men's doubles at the conference championships,” Smith wrote in an email.
She said Head and Kardos are “partnering up to place top three in mixed doubles which is a possibility, come the conference championship.”
Ramdhani is focusing on achieving a second-place finish at the conference championships in women's singles.
She hopes that would enable her to compete in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) national badminton championships, which will be held in Mississauga, Ont. March 4-7.
