The Olds High School girls golf team finished in fourth at a provincial tournament held on September 23 and 24.
The team of Haley and Jenna Weseen and Erin and Nicole Schultz were tied for third with the Lacombe High School team after the first day of competition at the Strathmore Golf Course on Sept. 23 with a score of 298, but an injury to Haley on Sept. 24 meant that she had to pull out of the competition midway through the final 18 holes at Muirfield Lakes Golf Club in Lyalta. It meant that the remaining three girls had to play without their teammate.
The Spartans finished eight shots back of the foursome from Lacombe. Cochrane High School won the championship.
“The girls were disappointed in their final result,” said Neil Skaluba, the school's golf coach. “They could have done better.”
Skaluba said the girls did well during the short three-week golf season, with Nicole winning the opening tournament on Sept. 10 at Gleniffer Lake and Erin placing second. The team then qualified for the provincial tournament by placing second at the south central zone tournament the following weekend in Strathmore.
Skaluba said the girls were golfing all summer in preparation for the short three-week high school season, but since Haley and Erin will be graduating at the end of the school year, there will be spots open for next year's team. He said the boys golf team will also be looking for more players next season.
“We need more competitive high school boys and girls golfing,” he said.
