Several hockey players from Olds and area played in the 2016 Alberta Winter Games this month.

Cara Corsiatto and Charlie Wright were representing Zone 2 in the male tournament, winning silver.

On the female side, Cremona's Madison Black and Olds' Emma Dixon and the Zone 2 team finished fifth.

Trina Radcliffe was the director of operations for the Zone 2 female team.

"One of the best experiences for the athletes of the Winter Games is the camaraderie and meeting other athletes. On our bus ride to Medicine Hat we also had local boxer Anthony Walsh," she wrote in an email.

Walsh and other Zone 2 boxers cheered on her team, she continued. The team missed his gold medal fight because they had a game at the time, but made it to the medal presentation in time.

Zone 2 (Big Country), which includes Olds, won the Spirit of Sport Award for demonstrating fair play, sportsmanship and team cooperation on and off the field of play.

The Minister's Cup for the greatest point improvement from one Games to the next went to Zone 5 (Black Gold Yellowhead).

The Alberta Cup goes to the zone with the most points: Zone 3 (Calgary) which won 40 gold, 42 silver and 30 bronze medals.
