OLDS — The Bantam AA Grizzlys ended up in fifth place in their own tournament, but organizers say that’s pretty good, considering the quality of the competition.
The tournament was held Jan. 16-19.
Sixteen teams took part from B.C. to Humboldt Sask., including several from across Alberta.
The Grizzlys won the game for fifth place, downing the Central Alberta Selects 2-0.
The Humboldt Broncos won the tournament, edging the North East B.C. Trackers 2-1 in exciting fashion.
“It was like half a second to go in the game and the guy took a slapshot from the blueline and it went in the net just as the buzzer went,” said Grizzlys business manager Gary Gaudette.
“Quite the finish. It was a 1-1 game until then, so it was a classic gold medal game, it was really good.”
Gaudette and Bantam AA Grizzlys manager Missy McDermid say the Grizzlys did well, given the skill of the competing teams, which they said was higher than last year’s tournament.
Gaudette noted that last year, 12 teams participated.
