Wrestlers from Olds High School went into a two-week break for the holiday season on a high note after three Spartans captured medals in various divisions at a tournament in Lethbridge.

Maeghan Wild topped the field in the 65-kilogram girls division while Luke Daley was second in the 120-kilogram division at the LCI Green and Gold tournament on Dec. 14.

Ten wrestlers from OHS competed at the event, with Dwayne Neustaeter capturing bronze in the 72-kilogram event. Kevin Waldron finished fourth in the 76-kilogram class, while Austin Waldron finished fifth in the 82-kilogram division. William Reiswig and Bryce Wachtler finished sixth and seventh respectively in the 90-kilogram division, Jeremy Zawalykut finished sixth in the 98-kilogram weight class, Mitchell Ormann finished seventh in the 65-kilogram division and Seth Quilley finished ninth in the 82-kilogram weight class. There were 270 wrestlers competing at the tournament.

“I was very impressed with our results. The kids have really improved throughout the season so far and did an excellent job at the tournament,” said George Grant, a wrestling coach at OHS.

The wrestlers will now take a short break with some travelling to a wrestling camp from December 28 to 31 in Edmonton hosted by the University of Alberta. Another camp hosted by the University of Calgary will also take place in the early part of January. Grant said each of the camps will draw wrestlers from throughout the province and give them a chance to work on skills before resuming tournament action later in January.

“(The camps are) a good time for anybody new that wants to come out to get a little bit of training in before we get back into the tournament schedule in the new year,” Grant said.
