Olds Olympia FC maintained its hold on second place in tier 1 of the Red Deer City Soccer Association's men's division with a 6-3 victory over Wright Upholstery on July 26. The game took place at Red Deer College's main field.

“We played pretty well, capitalized on our chances is the big thing. Every chance we had we scored,” said Vance Markham, the team's spokesperson.

Rolf Van Benthem scored a pair while Guillance Charbonneau, Jonathon Guenther, Terry O'Neill and Jonathan Snively added single markers for Olympia.

Olympia FC sat in second place in the division after last week's game, six points up on the third place Ferus Green Hornets and one behind division leader Red Deer United, which has 29 points. Red Deer United has three games in hand on Olympia FC, as the schedule winds down.

Olympia FC has three games remaining, two of which are at the Olds College field. The next contest for the team will be a game against Global United on Thursday at Hunting Hills High School in Red Deer.

Markham said the team would be using the nine-day break between games to its advantage by practising and staying sharp, hoping to maintain its stranglehold on second place. The chances of catching the undefeated Red Deer United in the standings looked remote, Markham said, as that team has been the class of the division, with only two ties on an otherwise unblemished record. One of those ties came recently against Olympia FC.

“The long-term thing is to try and stay in second place. I'm pretty sure (Red Deer United) is not going to go on a losing streak,” he said.
