OLDS — The École Olds High senior boys captured the Chinook's Edge Athletic Association title on March 4 after beating Cremona at home 68-44.

Olds coach Kent Lorenz said his squad played very well in the final.

"It was a hard fought game against a very well-balanced team from Cremona," said Lorenz.

The Spartans have had a good season so far, going undefeated in league play and doing well at the five tournaments they attended.

"We've played some very strong provincially-ranked teams this season and held our own," he said.

"Highlights this season would be winning the league championship and finishing on the A side of all of our tournaments this year, which is quite an accomplishment. We placed second at the George Mac tournament (in Airdrie) and third at our own home tournament, the Spartan Classic. Both of those stand out as some of our best basketball of the season."

The Spartans are a hard-working team and are a pleasure to coach, said Lorenz.

"We have a balanced team that works hard on defence," he said. "The team has a mix of Grade 10s to Grade 12s, with two seniors graduating this year."

The team is preparing now for the South Central 3A Zone Championships in Cochrane March 13-14.

It'll be a very competitive zone tournament with all eight teams being strong, said Lorenz.

École Olds High School faces off against the host Cochrane Cobras team, the top-seeded team in the zone. The Cobras are currently ranked sixth in the province.

With Strathmore hosting provincials this year, three teams from the South Central zone tournament will advance to provincials.

"The top four teams are all ranked provincially," he said. "Our team has been working hard all season in practice and are ready to challenge for a spot in provincials."
