The Olds Grizzlys selected hometown player Chase Olsen to be the team's next captain.

Team president Shane Dixon made the announcement at the club's annual general meeting on June 15.

"I'm excited. I feel it's a great blessing. We've got a great team with us and we made huge strides last year," Olsen said.

The last player from Olds to captain the team was Spencer Dorowicz back in 2014.

Olsen takes the reins from graduating defenceman Jack Goranson.

This past season, he was the scoring leader among all rookies in the league. He finished second overall behind teammate Wyatt Noskey.

A statement from head coach Dana Lattery read that Olsen had proved his abilities on the ice.

"What Chase also proved last season was his ability to be a leader and a difference-maker in our community, without having a letter on his chest," the statement read.

"He is an extremely bright young man and a very magnetic person, who people are naturally attracted to. Chase puts his teammates first and lives to serve others. These were all extremely important to me in choosing a captain."

Olsen is currently spending his off-season working, spending time with family, hiking in the mountains and reading.
