Any hopes remaining of a football turnaround this season for the Cyclones were dashed Oct. 27 when the peewee team was knocked out of the playoffs by the Stettler Panthers 57-0.
It was the smaller victories local players took home with them as they look forward to the year-end banquet.
“We were a completely different team from the first time we played them,” said coach Wally Genz. “We stopped Settler numerous times on defence.”
The weather was a biting cold and the team came prepared.
“Our players were bundled up as best as they could,” he said. “We had players that were stepping up and having good plays.”
Towards the tail end of the season Sam Cuff was moved into quarterback position and Adam McMillan to fullback, to add versatility to the squad.
“We thought we'd give it a try and see if it'd work and it did,” he said.
On top of a disappointing season that followed the historic winning streak of the previous year, more bad news came rolling in.
“The school board is taking the portable we had been using” to store football equipment, said Genz, who is going to be keeping items in his own home.
“We've been told we need to get our equipment out of there sooner rather than later,” he said, noting he is requesting a meeting with Chinook's Edge to discuss the situation.
“There's gotta be a reason to it,” he said. “Let's come up with a plan to try to fix it.”
