Volunteers with sports skills or knowledge are desired to help start up a summer grassroots sports program for kids in Penhold this year.
Tara Wells, the community services manager for the Town of Penhold, said she and Derek Crichton, the facilities manager at the Penhold Regional Multiplex have partnered up to talk to the community about setting up the program.
A meeting will be held on April 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the multiplex to determine interest in running and participating in summer sports programs for Penhold youth.
“Basically the purpose is: who's willing to drive these kinds of program?” Wells said of the meeting.
“We're just looking for what the interest is.”
While the town is willing to help with the program the majority of it needs to be community-driven, Wells said.
If a grassroots program runs this year, it won't be the first time the Penhold community has set one up. There was one last year and there have been other previous incarnations. Wells said last year a recreation coordinator from the town assisted but the position no longer exists.
Wells said the programs will be decided by those who are willing to lead the programs.
“We're looking for people who have a passion,” she said.
Previously grassroots summer sports programs have included sports like T-ball, road hockey and soccer skills, she said.
Those with kids who want sports programming and those willing to offer their skills or time to the cause should consider coming out to the April 19 meeting, Wells said.
