Penhold maintains lead atop AJFHL's south division

Facing their toughest opponents of the season, the Penhold Amazons extended their unbeaten streak to eight games with wins over the Mountain View Hericanes and the Fort Saskatchewan Fury this weekend.

Down 2-0 heading into the third period of Saturday’s game at the Penhold Multiplex, division rivals Mountain View rallied late to tie the game on goals by Jessica Anderson and Laurel McLean.

The Amazons had built a 1-0 lead after one and increased the lead to 2-0 after two on goals by Karley Holt and Brianna Purvis. After a scoreless overtime period, the Amazons salvaged the win with a goal by leading scorer Ciana Zweifel in double overtime for the 3-2 win.

Zweifel lead the way again on Sunday, picking up two goals in the Amazons’ 3-1 win over the north division-leading Fort Saskatchewan Fury. Alexa Stang chipped in with the other marker. Zweifel now has 8 goals and 3 assists for 11 points.

The Fury’s second period goal was the first goal allowed by Amazons’ goalie Jessica Amendt all season. Amendt has five wins and a unbelievable goals against average of 0.19.

The Amazons, who sit two points ahead of the Lethbridge Jr. Eagles for first in the Alberta Junior Female Hockey League’s south division, hit the road for two games this weekend. Puck drop for Saturday’s rematch against the Fort Saskatchewan Fury at the Dow Centennial Centre is 5 p.m. On Sunday, the Amazons travel to Caroline for a tilt with the Spruce Grove Stars at Kurt Browning Arena. Game time is 12 p.m.
