PENHOLD - Penhold Minor Soccer is gearing up for another season.

The local organization recently held a fundraising barbecue to help raise money for the season that begins on May 1.

"We're going on our third season here in Penhold and we're trying to get a little more fundraising to help get the field set up and some new soccer balls, line painting and other maintenance on the field," said Graham McPhee, president of the Penhold Minor Soccer Association. "We've exceeded our goal today. Penhold's support has been phenomenal."

Teams currently play outdoors, said McPhee, but they are working on providing indoor soccer as well in the near future.

The association welcomes both boys and girls in various age categories.

"We've been taking U-4 to U-14 players and we're always looking for players above that in U-18 (category) too," he said.

The association has been taking registrations for the new season for close to two months noted McPhee, adding they are working with Euro Sport in Red Deer to have jerseys ready for the season.

Last year the association welcomed about 115 kids and this year it is at about the same number so far he added.

"Most of our base is the younger-aged kids," said McPhee, noting there will be soccer clinics this season. "We're starting with the fundamentals. It includes the basics of soccer but we're trying to start up more fun (activities) too for beginners of soccer."

The season is a short one he noted, running from May 1 to June 14.

"Our U-10, U-12 competitive team went everywhere last year. They played in Innisfail, Bowden, Lacombe and Camrose," said McPhee. "If we can get some more kids, we're going to try to have a house league here in Penhold too."
