Olds Velites Track Club throwing athlete Haylin Eling threw a personal best of 31.71 metres (m) in the discus throw competition to earn second place during the Alberta Schools Athletic Association ASAA Provincials, held June 7-8 in Calgary.
In the junior javelin competition, Jesse Maetche tossed a personal best of 42.70 metres (m) to earn seventh place.
Then on June 9, Eling competed in both the discus and shotput at the New Balance 3 meet in Calgary.
"She threw well considering it was her third day of competition in a row. No personal bests, but strong numbers with a 29.03 m in discus and 11.03 m in shotput," Olds Velites Track Club head coach Rachel Andres wrote in an email to the Albertan.
Andres described the weather on Friday as "horrid" as athletes gathered for the shotput competition. It was raining with a wind chill of -2.
Despite those conditions, Eling "gave it her all," and threw 11.63 m to place second, Andres noted.
Andres also competed on June 9, throwing a 56.26 m in a tailwind.
"A good, solid mark. But not far enough to make sure I am on the Pan Am Games team," she wrote. "I have one last chance on Friday (June 14) at the CALTAF meet held in Calgary to hit the mark I need. And I will have competition there to push me, so that will help. My closest competition today was 16 m away."
