Organizers are taking registration for the Kids Right to Play Canada soccer tournament, which will be held at the Elks Field in Olds on Saturday, Aug. 11.

Kids age five to 12 are welcome to participate in the event, which is free. A maximum of 40 participants will be accepted.

Plans call for the tournament to run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m.

Outdoor cleats are recommended.

Organizer Brian Cook of Olds College says the tournament will be played with "randomly-made teams."

Participants will be sorted into two age groups. The first one will consist of kids age five to seven. The second group will consist of kids age nine to 12. Eight-year-olds will have the option of going in the first or second group.

Cook says teams will consist of three players and a goalie. They'll duel it out on mini fields staked out with cones.

The games will be short -- lasting 10 minutes. However, there's an advantage to that. Cook says that will enable kids to play several games throughout the tournament.

Snacks will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own snacks as well as water and sunscreen.
