The finals of 2017-18 for the Mountain View Junior Cowpoke Rodeo saw about 70 young athletes competing, with about 40 family members and other fans coming out to watch.
Held at the Raecer Arena in Westward Ho east of Sundre on April 21, the finals were the culmination of six rodeos this season, with points gathered throughout the season being used to determine prize winners.
Competitors up to 14 years of age took part in events such as goat tying, goat untying, pole bending, chute dogging, steer riding, breakaway roping and barrel racing.
“We gave away 20 buckles and numerous prizes including high point blankets in each age category, which was a new prize this year since we thought that a high point overall wasn’t quite enough,” said co-organizer Amanda Sande.
“All the kids received a buckle and were eligible for prizes up to fourth place in each event, which couldn’t have taken place without our sponsors.
“These kids have grown so much in the past winter. It’s great to see them and the horses get better each rodeo.”
