Being involved with high school sports not only helps enhance skill levels but it is a chance to know more people, a way to relieve stress, achieving a feeling of importance and being in a place where they feel they belong.
This is the belief of Ashley Grant, athletic director of Sundre High School, who added the benefits can be applied to everyday situations such as teamwork, cooperation, determination, persistence, perseverance, sportsmanship, communication and much more.
As well, Grant said it's an opportunity for students to set goals for themselves and as a team, as well as improving their overall health.
The Sundre Scorpions recently ended their volleyball season, which ran from September to November.
Grant said the season overall went well for all the teams, consisting of a senior boys, senior girls, two junior varsity girls and a junior boys team.
“Both senior teams went on to compete in zones where they both played some very competitive games,” said Grant.
She encouraged people to sign up for the upcoming basketball season, which runs from December to March.
“It does promote physical activity and provides students with an opportunity to set a goal and accomplish it,” she said.
As it is a big commitment, Grant said the teams generally have practice twice a week and games once to twice a week, along with occasional tournaments on the weekends.
“To be a Scorpion takes a lot of hard work and commitment but on the other hand it is a lot of fun,” said student Kylen Fournier.
Fellow student Kyle Hufnagel said to be a team member requires determination, teamwork and patience, while teacher Ryan Beck added a Scorpion is “athleticism, pride, drive and fun.”
