The track season has kicked off with 30 Cyclones between Grades 10 and 12 starting practice last week.
Coach Jeff Anderson said students will be at Lindsay Thurber High School in Red Deer today for area competition.
“We have competitors for every age category,” he said, adding that the Cyclones will be in 90 per cent of the track and field categories.
To be eligible for competitions, “they have to do at least two events and can do as many as four.” He said the chosen events can be a mix between both track and field options.
Students who qualify at areas will move on to zones next week, May 23 in Camrose.
Anderson said last year two Cyclones qualified for provincials: Brandyn Blain for the 100-200 specialties and Brittany Lane, a long jumper. Both are back in track and field this year.
He said Brittany used to be a national level trampoline athlete and last year placed first “by a long shot.” Because she's still in Grade 11 and at an intermediate level, “she's in a great position.”
On May 25 Innisfail Jr./Sr. High School will host the junior high qualifiers for the Chinook's Edge North Athletic Association, which will be held June 6.
