Twenty-one points in under three minutes was all it took for the Olds High School Spartans football team to defeat the Lord Beaverbrook High School Lords on Sept. 11.
The Spartans beat the Lords 47-0 in the team's home opener before a crowd of more than 50 people.
OHS improves to 3-0 on the season.
The game was scoreless until the final three minutes of the second quarter when Olds runningback Bryce Wachtler carried for the evening's first touchdown.
Olds recovered the next kickoff, which later resulted in another touchdown.
After that score, the Spartans forced a Lords fumble on the next kickoff, putting the team in good field position.
Spartans quarterback Connor Jorgensen connected with receiver Dwayne Neustaeter for the touchdown on the drive.
Head coach George Grant said after the game that he did not expect his defence to shut out the team from Calgary.
“I was really impressed with our defence. Our defensive line did an awesome job of containing their quarterback, who's very elusive,” Grant said. “Put the pressure on him so whenever he did get to pass, it was a hurried pass.”
Despite the lopsided score, Grant said he didn't think his team played a flawless game, adding that there was plenty to improve upon.
“I really think that we've got a number of things that we have to work on. We definitely gave up a few penalties that definitely allowed them an opportunity with the ball and move it,” he said. “But the players are very enthusiastic and focused on the game plan that we have from week to week.”
The Spartans will next play on the road against Calgary's Bishop Carroll High School on Sept. 18.
