Several local high school basketball teams were busy this weekend playing at the Olds Junior Varsity (JV) tournament held Friday and Saturday at the Ralph Klein Centre.
The Olds Spartans beat Hugh Sutherland School (HSS) Kodiaks from Carstairs 69-37 and Bert Church from Airdrie 81-25 to advance to the final against the Cremona Cougars. In the final, Olds beat Cremona 60-43.
Larissa Cameron, head coach for the Olds team, said the team played well throughout the tournament.
"Our athletes gave everything they had left in the championship game, and as coaches Santana Scarff and I couldn't be more proud of them and their determination to succeed," said Cameron. "They battled until the very end of the tournament."
Cameron said the tournament went very well with strong competition on all sides.
"It was great to see teams that aren't all in the same league get together and play one another," she said. "It's always nice to play teams we don't always see. It keeps us on our toes and forces us to keep learning and growing outside our comfort zone."
The HSS JV boys lost all three of their games but improved through the tournament, said coach Travis Butt.
"We had some great performances from Josh Heninger and Zack Keim," said Butt. "We had a close six point loss to W. H. Croxford (Airdrie) in our first game. Despite the losses, we had some good individual leadership and some clutch shots from Luke Williamson."
