Strength, speed and athletic ability were put to the test during the recent high school area track and field meet in Red Deer.

A total of 13 athletes from grades 9 to 12 at Innisfail High School competed in the area track and field meet held at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School in Red Deer on May 18.

"The Innisfail athletes put forth an excellent effort despite the blistering heat,” said Ed Coles, track and field coach. “Several of our athletes are going on to compete in the zones final competition next Wednesday (May 25) in Camrose."

High schools competing in the track and field meet included those from Red Deer, Spruce View, Rocky Mountain House, Delburne, Innisfail and Sylvan Lake.

Coles noted that athletes competed against other students in their own grade levels in a number of different sports, including long jump, high jump, triple jump, shot put, javelin, discus, hurdles and metre runs at varying distances.

“The top three athletes in each event qualify to go on to the zone finals in Camrose (May 25),” he said.

Elizabeth Maciborsky competed in the 200-metere run, long jump, triple jump, and discus; while Rebekah Maciborsky was a competitor in the 100- metre, 200-metre, hurdles, and high jump events. Michelle Gerber competed in the 1,500-metre and 3,000-metre races; Cherise Ek in the discus, shot put and javelin; and Natasha Lester participated in triple jump and javelin.
