The Sundre Soccer Club’s season is off to a good start, although the recent weather has somewhat hampered play.

Amber Jenkins, president of the organization, said last week during an interview that the new season is shaping up well, “except for the snow.”

There are about 145 children, including boys and girls between the ages of two and 15, registered, making up a total of 14 teams, said Jenkins, adding the group also has plenty of coaches and volunteers lined up.

“We’re full — we are good,” she said.

Operating under the umbrella of Fun Team Alberta, the soccer club is essentially an in-house, non-competitive league in which the local teams play against one another, she said.

“It’s very low key.”

Although registration was back in February, she said parents and guardians could still sign up a child basically any time.

“It’s open all year,” said Jenkins, adding she does not want to turn away any kids who are really keen to play. Inquiries can be submitted to [email protected].

Practices and games, which are held concurrently, started the first week of April, and are held every Wednesday starting just after 5 p.m. for the first group of younger players, followed by the older kids at 6:30 p.m. At this point, games are held largely depending on the weather until conditions are clear enough to play, she said.

“We’d play in the rain or snow,” but the accumulation of the latter, or a lightning and thunderstorm, typically forces the club to cancel games, she said.

For the second year in a row, the teams, which previously played on the soccer pitches behind the schools near Snake Hill, are using the fields along the Bergen Road off Sixth Street SE near where the recycling centre used to be located, she said.

“We’re glad to have the extra parking,” she said with a chuckle.

Jenkins expressed the club’s gratitude for donated assistance in relocating their equipment shed from the former location over to the new site, and extended her appreciation to the contribution that came courtesy of Mark Crouch Backhoe Services.
