SUNDRE - Numbers held steady for the Sundre Curling Club’s annual women’s bonspiel.
“Things went really well — they were awesome,” said Sharon Olsen, the women’s afternoon league rep.
There were 20 teams playing Feb. 7-9, with players coming from the Calgary and Cochrane areas as well as Cremona, Olds and Sundre, said Olsen.
“It was the same as last year,” she said.
The winner of the A event was team Weber from Calgary and area, while team McIntyre, a local crew, placed first in the B event. Team Brooks, from Cochrane and area, won the C event.
Several of the visiting rinks complimented the Sundre club on how well the bonspiel was organized and run, said Olsen.
“All of the ladies in the club worked to make it happen. It’s the members in the club that make it work the best,” she said, later also expressing gratitude for the “great sponsors in town.”
The Sundre Curling Club has been offering daytime as well as evening women’s curling leagues, with Karen McIntyre handling the evening draws.
“The evening curling has a lot of new members,” said Olsen, adding it “is really good to see the new young member support.”
With the season ending in March, it is a bit late to join the league, but there is a list for spares at the curling rink for women who might be interested in including their names, she said.
New members are always welcome, said Olsen, praising the community's ongoing support.
The next bonspiel is the doubles' event, which is scheduled to take place Saturday, Feb. 22.
